I throw one for schooling bass on a local lake. Works pretty good, haven't thrown one for smallies yet, but on those days when a big one follows a hooked fish around it might be worth it.
  2. I don't think that it will matter in most situations. I use 10 pound exclusively now on most applications in the summertime. In winter I will downsize to 8lb test, especially if I am fishing light jigs or jerkbaits. BTW, I almost always use braid on spinning tackle, and mono or flouro on my baitcasters. 20 lb braid casts just as far as mono/flouro, and you won't have to worry about a fish breaking you off...even if you snag a carp or hook a big flathead.
  3. I am sure that tears them up. How is the durability?
  4. Sorry to hear that Dana. I have caught some really good LMB and even a few nice smallies out of the the salt. They are in there for sure. I did well with crankbaits and bottom bouncing jigs. I have also caught a few nice bass on spinnerbaits near the mouth.
  5. If you can, I would head up the salt river on the missouri side. Some good LMB and even some smallies in there. Some good fishing at the mouth too.

Well, how does one go about becoming a member of the team?
  7. If they wanted to do what is right by the environment, they wouldn't have been crossing the creek in the first place. They just want to avoid any further public outcry. All of this for a place to dump a bunch of trash (that at some point will probably leach into the creek).
  8. Cedar and Iowa rivers on the Iowa side, and I would check the tributaries of those streams if they are rocky with good habitat and flow. Green river and Henderson Creeks on the Illinois side. Some really good streams if you drive north a ways from the cities.
  9. LOL, thanks to Tim Smith for posting this over on ozarkanglers.com.
  10. I would adjust the scale to HUC 12 or NHD+ and enable NHD streams and watersheds for more detailed info. Come on Gavin, your not going to give us your favorite spots?
  11. Just saw this today, looks like someone is trying to get it going again. http://www.riversmallies.com/?page_id=34
  12. Try round bend needle nose pliers. Makes it alot easier to grip the split ring.
  13. I use all three, each has it's place. Baitcaster and spinnebait/buzzbait when covering water. Spinning rod to toss rapalas and skip flukes under low brush. I use the fly rod almost exclusively while wading.
  14. Thanks Gordon http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?05592100 Cowden gauge shows 82 CFS today and shelbyville is still releasing at 46 cfs, there must be a tributary somewhere that will raise the CFS? I will give it a go even if it is low, I don't mind a little (lot) of dragging. Just means that we will probably be the only people on the river hopefully. Andy
  15. I am looking to do a float below lake shelbyville in a couple of weeks, anyone have any info on where I takeout at? I plan on putting in at the canoe launch below the dam. This will be my first float on this section of the river.

    Stripping baskets

I have a video "Lefty's tips and tricks" where he lays some netting down on top of willow weeds to keep his fly line from getting tangled. Of course I really don't care what works for Ronk or Lefty, I care what works for me--and that is a stripping basket. I don't use it while wading (although I definitely see applications for it), I use while fishing from a boat or my canoe. There are times when I strip too fast to be able to effectively manage the line and a stripping basket works great. Just my .02
  17. I am interested to find out when you are going, I am going up june 8-13th, I am leaving out of EP 16 to Lac la croix and basecamping. I am gonna take a LOT of tackle, I find it hard not to, with so many fish species to fish for.
  18. Hey, that's my thread! Post some picks when you can, I will do the same. Here are some initial pics. The lowered seat. And the reason I got mine for $50 off. It is missing the "FI" from field and stream. And of course, my first fish out of it. January 3rd 2009.
