  1. Nice expose in this mornings tribune on the lack of regs in illinois for these hog CAFO's. Not sure what if anything we can do about it. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/watchdog/pork/ct-pig-farms-illinois-met-20160802-story.html Mike D
  2. Steve, My family has you on our prayer list. As Mike C said stay strong in the Lord Mike D
  3. Mark, I just sent your comments to a friend that works for the EPA ( feds ) I believe they got involved in the permit process for the proposed facility in JoDavies county that was defeated. I asked him for advice on how you should proceed and who you should talk to. I'll get back to you as soon as I hear from him. I share your concerns. When the CAFO was proposed for JoDavies county it had the potential not only to pollute the ground water but to destroy the Apple River as well. In the late 1980's an ammonia spill in the area of the state park KILLED ALL LIFE IN THE APPLE for several miles. Fortunately it recovered. Wisconsin has had a few stream sections wiped out due to manure runoffs. You may want to do some research in that area to make your case. Generally these facilities generate way too much manure for the land to handle. With a winter like we've had and the ground being frozen for so long where does the manure go ? I think we know. Mike D
  4. Saw an 18 " SMB taken on the DesPlaines up in the Wheeling area last weekend. When I informed the guy that it was illegal to keep Smallmouth From April 1st to June 15th he basically told me what I could do with myself. Said he was going to take it home and eat it. Given the questionable water quality in the DP I hope he gets sick on it. I had heard reports of smallies being caught in that stretch of river but this was the first one I witnessed. there are a surprisingly good number of those other bass in the river. Mike D
  5. I've decided to help my wife find a great Christmas gift for her special hubby, and a sport camera is on the list. Have been doing some research on the Go Pro Hero 3 Black edition and the JVC Adixxion. Are there any users of either out there that can share your thoughts and experiences with these cameras. I would like to know about real world picture and video quality, ease of use, battery life etc. Thanks, Mike D

  7. It's great news. I've fished this stream for over 30 years now and the number of 100 year floods that have occurred during this span are too numerous to count. Earlier this summer the area received 13" of rain over 24 hour period. There is no way in heck that this guys manure lagoon could have handled that amount of rain or even a 6" gully washer over a few hours. Most of it would have been washed into the south branch and then into the main branch. Can you spell COMPLETE FISH KILL over several miles of stream. His attorney still seems optimistic about construction continuing, lets hope not. Mike D

  11. While I agree with the sentiment to fork over a few more $$$$ for the cause, at this point in time the answer must be a resounding no. The states financial crisis IS NOT OUR FAULT, the blame rest squarely on the shoulders of the state legislature. Over the past two decades we the taxpayers have sent increasing amounts of $$$$ to Springfield, at twice the rate of inflation and what have they done with it? spent it of course. Jim Edgar left office leaving behind a billion $$$$ plus surplus. When Ryan arrived on the scene, he broke open the piggy bank and spent it faster that you can say Jackie Robinson. Members of both parties indulged in this spending orgy. As if that wasn't enough, Ryan increased spending leaving behind a four billion $$$$ deficit. Enter Balgo the reformer. During his first term tons of cash came in but rather than control spending and pay down the deficit, he and the bunch spent it faster than it came in. After his six years we now have close to a 10 billion deficit. Some reform! As for for forking over a few more bucks for a license, park fee etc and thinking that it will go to a protected dedicated fund, well that's the stuff fairy tales are made of. Consider the Road and bridge fund where your motor fuel taxes go to supposedly to maintain our infrastructure: Over the past 15 years and possibly before that. During Ryan's term they were siphoning off (stealing ) 150 - 300 million $$$$ per year. Last year they stole close to 600 MILLION $$$$ form what is supposed to be a dedicated fund. The year before it was close to that. If we add up all of these thefts, is comes to billions. Knowing the propensity of this current bunch to lie cheat and steal, some of you still think its a good idea to give these thieves more $$$$ and you believe that they can be trusted? Quinn now wants an income tax increase, plus more taxes on businesses. His plan is a joke and should not be supported. He intends to sell this deal by offering a tax swap. A reduction in property taxes for and increase in the state income tax. It's a ruse. Any reduction in property taxes will be small and temporary, and eventually we all will be paying more, much more, even with his increased deductions. If you want more $$$$ for the DNR here's an idea. Lets research the voting records of the legislator's and see who voted for all of this increased spending and who voted for the theft of the R&B funds. Then lets see if we can get a lien or assignment against their pensions and garnish their retirement $$$. Not sure if it's possible but I for one would like to see it.
  12. I've been politically active for about 20 years now, the last eight as an elected official. This proposed ban on not only lead fishing tackle, but on lead ammunition as well should come as no surprise to sportsmen who are second amendment supporters. Back in 1994-95, the original intent of the lead tackle ban was a back door attempt at gun control. The intent was to ban lead on piecemeal basis leading to a complete ban if that is even possible Ban lead and no bullets, no bullets no need for a gun period. That is how these people think. I was waiting for this to get resurrected because it's no secret that the current administration is vehemently anti-gun. What they cannot get through Congress they will try to regulate out of existence with laws like this. I smelled a rat when the lead ban for Illinois was proposed, but had nothing to go on. I contacted some of my sources to find out who really authored that bill, because it was not Senator Steans, It was written before she was appointed to office and had another sponsor before her. She was simply the water boy or girl for this bill. To date I have not heard anything but will try to get an answer sometime next week. It has been my experience that a good number of pols lie about the real intention of bills like this. They would never dare to express their real intentions, they would be run out of town, so they smoke screen it with a cause that you and I can accept, like saving fish and birds. Mike D

  14. No need for special boots. I use my regular wading shoes, 3 MM neoprene socks and gravel guards without any problems. Having said that, Kevin brings up a good point relating to water quality. You must learn to be judicious about whether to wear waders or wet wade based upon the water quality, stream bottom etc. I used to wet wade a lot but in recent years have worn my waders 95 % of the time. A couple of streams I fish have high cattle usage and during the past few summers with very low flows, stagnant water, and all sorts of slime, scum etc. the waders were on, even during 95 degree heat. Even on a pristine stream like the Apple, in low summer flows, silt builds up and that silt contains all sorts of nasty stuff. A few years ago a kid in Florida died from exposure to a silt laden bacteria that he kicked up while diving into what was a clear water stream. He had an open sore on his leg allowing the bacteria to enter. After reading that, I became very cautious about where and when I wet wade. Mike D
