  1. Hey Brendon , glad you’re still around. Otters were stocked on the middle Fork of the Vermilion River. They have moved up and down the salt Fork and I have wiped out all the small mouths on some of the small spawning creeks. last year on the salt Fork was the worst. I can remember in 30 years. Not sure if it was Otters are just a down year. I have heard stories of people that had small ponds above the creeks, and the otters would go into the pond and completely wipe out the fish population. I did not do as much river fishing here locally last year I will try to get out more this year and let you know when I find out. Thanks again and good to hear from you.
  2. I have a good friend that is an antique lure collector. He has several glass fishing lures where a live minnow was placed inside and then the cap screwed on. They kind of look like a test tube with hooks. I guess they would work.
  3. Thanks Eric. Noticed they don’t carry freak sizes. Ha ha. I ended up getting two pairs of the Rogers waders so I may be done for a while but I will keep this on the back burner. Take care and keep those fishing reports coming.
  4. 😃 no fires but it does keep me from sinking so deep in the mud. Good to hear from you I hope you’re well.
  5. The boots are good probably the most comfortable bootfoot waders I’ve ever worn. I put a power step insoles in there because my arches aren’t the best. You know how I fish if I’m not getting something I’m moving usually I’m doing a couple miles a day easy. These guys seemed very easy to work with I think you could buy them walk around the house and if they didn’t feel good they would pay for the shipping back you might check with them first. I think the air space around your feet in a boot foot wader Might make them a little bit warmer. I’ve never been able to get the stocking foot and wading boot thing to work for me with my clown size feet.
  6. I just bought a new set of waders from Rogers sporting goods About a month or so ago. I’ve had a really hard time finding stuff that fits well and holds up to the type of fishing I do. I went ahead and ordered a second pair. They have a zip in and out liner and are breathable. Also there is a very tough nylon shinguard right where the thorns and barbed wire usually gets you. Haven’t worn them in warm weather but I’ve been out when it’s down to 18° and nice and warm. I’ve been wearing medium wool socks and a pair of jeans under them. Facemask parka and neoprene gloves with handwarmers on top. It’s nice that they are warm and also breathable a lot of days I’ll walk a couple miles and get pretty toasty.I spoke with a salesman there Matt over the phone who fishes a lot he was very helpful. These were on sale for $200 and I feel like they’re the best wadersI’ve ever had. So if you’re looking for waders give them a call.
  7. Hybrid from Clinton Lake super slow retrieve along the bottom. 2” white twister tails and cotton Cordell casting spoons. Fishing small feeder creek channels from shore 42 degree water.
  8. Do any of you guys purposely use lower gear ratio reels in the winter to make it easier to present a lure a little slower? I’ve had good luck with those $60 Pflueger president real’s in the 3500 size they hold up pretty well and you can pick them up at the Walmart. With the faster reels it seems like I really have to concentrate on slowing down my retrieve. I was also thinking that drinking beer while I was fishing might help me to slow down too.
  9. Buck Perry 👍 The only thing I would add is to find a brand of crank bait you like and buy the different sizes. That way when you’re checking out an area if you’re not hitting bottom you can put the next bigger size on.Always good to have different tools to do each job.
  10. You guys always do a great job. Thanks! Excellent food. Nice to meet some new guys and catch up with old friends.
  11. Wrapping the reel foot/base with electric tape will help keep your hands warm in cold weather.
  12. Seems like I spend a lot of time fishing underwater the water. This shimano reel has seals On each side of the handle and a seal by the rotor. There’s also no anti-reverse switch so one less place for water to get in. I’ll probably tear it up this is why we can’t have nice things.
  13. Does anybody have experience with these reels I just purchased one. I continue to burn through Reels as usual. I’ll keep you posted.
  14. Thanks for the fly fishing tips. Good stuff. 👍

    Mepps

Man you’re right about that. I was out with a friend musky fishing and watched him lose 3-4 heart break largemouths on the jump with the Mepps. This guys really a good fisherman doesn’t panic like me. I’ll let him know what you’ve experienced. Thanks.
  16. Good job. I feel like I need one of those boxes they use to work on radioactive stuff with the gloves that reach inside. I always have parts dropping and flying off the work bench.

    Mono rig?

Are any of you guys familiar with the mono rig a substitute for conventional fly line? I’ve been reading about it on a sight called Troutbitten. Sounds like it might work well with the heavier flys we throw for smallmouth. Thanks.
  18. I’ll have to try the slip floats in trees. So far I’ve just vertical jigged and dropshotted trees. I think the benefit of the slip float modification you described is that the float would show up bites, it would lay on its side as well as pull down bites. Thanks for the reminder I remember something about that modification and may have actually done it. My new SOP is to always have a Lure hanging (fly, crappie tube, small plastic worm) while I cast/vertical jig a spoon, Crappie jig for trout, gills or crappie.
  19. I just started fishing with slip floats. To save time and frozen hands you can balance them at home in a glass of water. Use a bent paper clip slipped up through the bottom of the float. Then add weights and a jig head and write down the size of weight on the float.

    Blow out

I wasn’t paying attention I was drawing cartoons like back in school. but he said a lot about fishing off shore once the water warms up. If you have a good depth sounder finding underwater islands might be easy. I try to drag an anchor a few feet above the bottom hoping it’ll catch on the island. Don’t stand while attempting this. I might also throw/ drift with a Carolina rig. Good tip on fishing marabou jigs after a mayfly hatch. Don’t be afraid to try different lakes if you’re not catching. Andrew has a bunch of good articles on line too. He said he fishes crankbaits slowly against the current for winter smallmouth when I asked him. Fishes above the thermocline for smallmouth in the summer 25-30 feet deep is as deep as he goes year round I think. Probably some of the other guys might be of more help.
