  1. I've learned to cast less, fish much slower, upsized to an 8 wt rod and line, and catch many more fish. Easier on the arm, shoulder, forearm. Enjoying the pace much more . And love catching more fish!!! Try it you'll like it!!!
  2. My 2 cents.... I use a 8 wt rod usually floating Clouser line, but always have the sinking line on a seperate spool as well. I tend to fish straight down stream with the sinking line and its truely amazing the amount of strikes you will get ( i should say be aware of) fishing like this. Also pick up many Walleye with this tech. top fly's is either a large wooly bugger or helgramite type streamer. Casting isnt so bad if your not trying to cast across the whole river... like i said i usually fish this rig straight downstream into slack/fast water seams and deeper pools. This year if the water ever gets wadable i have a new secret weapon... a tiny blade attached to the hook with a high end bearing all behind the Wooly bugger. No tail feathers, just the tiny blade fluttering. I know its not new, but its fun and looks good to me! Hope the Smallies like it!!!!
  3. If i cant get it in one shirt pocket then its too much... the other pocket gets a small set of bino's for the wildlife, a bottle of frozen water in the wader pouch. i travel lite, wade deep, if the fish dont bite it's my fault i'm not working it right!
  4. Hey ronk, i've actually observed smallies "shadowing" carp while they are feeding, and rutting up the bottom of the river. The smallies almost always seems to get the crayfish first! It's very cool to watch, kinda like a snipe tech. the smallies have put togather!
  5. Sure wish i had acess to all the great info. yrs. ago! I had to put it togather myself... and i think it made for some interesting casting... at least for those watching me from the shore!!!
  6. I think that the below normal river levels in the K3 river in the last few years have led to clearer water... thus more weeds... thus clearer water... thus even more clearer water. The "P" issue is a real one as well. Heavy siltation after the winter flood a few years ago added tremendous sand and silt load below the K3 damn. in the Kank. Also more anglers are spending more time on the Kank. adding to a heightened awarnesss of these issues. Just a few thoughts.

If i can cast it with a fly rod then its a fly to me!!
  8. Cold water, clear water, pellets from the sky... low water, mossy water, bugs in my eye... smooth water, orange sunsets, floating deer hair flys... smallies jumping in fall air till the day i die...
  9. I couldn't resist... i feel the learning curve is much steeper with the long rod, especially if your talking Smallmouth. With so few folks chasing Smallies with the long rod... it can be tough putting it all togather!! So much of the flyfishing world is Trout stuff. Fun to watch but not really the parts i needed to put it all togather. Thus the challenge! I have never been challenged so much as i have been since i've taken up Smallies on the fly. I am thinking of going back to the spinning gear for the fall just for a change, and so my buddy will fish with me more often. Also thinking of doing the minnow/bobber thing this fall... Davis Creek here i come!!!
  10. Mon. evening on the kank. I witnessed a new fisherman catch a 8" smallmouth on a crankbait. As he tried to get the hooks out of the fish he realized the fish had been out of the water for a bit... he then put the fish back into the water for about 15 seconds before finally unhooking the fish!!! I commented to him that was a great idea he had just had!!! He said he had just read on a fishing forum that if you couldn't hold your breath before unhooking the fish... that you should place it back into the water so it may catch its breath!!!! I thus submit Proof that these forums and ideas are effective!!!
  11. White flys are done i hope you all got the chance to try out this pattern!!
  12. Kayak sold on 7/23/06 thanks for looking!!
