I live in Algonquin and like chasing smallies south of the dam. I prefer to wade, but when conditions or time doesn't allow that, I'll fish from the bank. My go to bait is the "Helgie" in green and pumpkin/ green. I like the small ones on a 3/16th oz jig fished in current breaks and seams. White Twister Tails are my second choice. Put them on a light - medium spinning outfit and you're good to go.
