Stopped by the "pet store" last night, went up top and scored three with a few more blowups that I missed. an absolute monster came unbuttened after many carthweels (I'm haunted :( )

That fly looks like an old time flatfish/lazy ike lure.I know how bad you feel losin a "monster".A few weeks ago I lost a sure 20+.He wasn't able to shake the fly despite 2 huge jumps which made me feel confident that he was solidly hooked. He than started to make repeated short powerful surges eventually pulling free of the fly.BUMMER!!! The 16" I caught a few minutes later was little consolation.

i have had several good fly anglers tell me that the wiggle bug has a history of low percentage of hook up and landing the fish.i have one a few of them and they look great in the water and i have to agree that les than 50% of hit are hooked good. rich

Stripping with aggressive rod tip manipulation, I stuck a small peice of split shot a foot or so above the fly to slow the suspended rise during the pauses.

Rich, I think thats true with alot of top water for SM. Many times I find bigger smallies are either deep hooking or slappn it, I've learned to switch to a suspended style baitfish when there slappn at it.
