Critter a day

Found this hatchling painted turtle around noon today while out for a walk with my wife. Still has its egg tooth. Must have hatched out of a clutch that overwintered. Lucky little one! Lots of painted and snapping turtles are around our house. We are blocks from a pond and a big marsh. The resident turtles like to nest in the soft dirt of people's flowerbeds away from the pond. Most hatchlings are quickly gobbled up by birds or hit by cars as they make their way to the water.

The little turtle cleaned up nicely after some hydration:

Steve ... that northern red salamander is awesome.

Major computer problems preventing me from posting 'critter a day.' I can't wait to get straightened out, because yesterday I took pictures of a fox carrying a dead woodchuck in its mouth. The prey is about half the size of the predator!

I also caught 5 nice LMB yesterday.
