2.5 inch leech, looks like a minnow.

#2 Octopus Hook, there isn't an octopus within 800 miles of Lee, IL.

I am rich's ofishal fly fotografer. Rich says that the fly gets better the more you use it. Like this one that has caught 20 bass rich says.

Rob,

When I put up the photo, I did not have time to add the text. This is the fly and material rich is talking about. I am sure he will chime in.

as you can see in the first photo the hair sets back once it gets used and abused . mike, it looks like you furled the tail and palmered forward dont see that it was backwrapped. by backwrapping 4 times and coming forward it stiffens the area past the bend to help it keep from fouling. rich .

OK, so who's sending me one of these things in white so I can provide a review and issue a "Consumer report" ? Ha

I wanna see what it does in the water and make sure it's not just another pretty face.

I'll take the less stiff tail and the more likely fouling if it gives the fly a more "come hither" movement

Rob,

You really are fixated on material action. At one end of the range are marabou, ostrich plumes, and bunny strips which won't stop moving. Hackle and synthetic hairs in the middle. Squirrel tail and bucktail are near the other end with deer body and elk hair at the other end. And they all catch fish. Woody sez it is best to start with figuring out what you want the fly to do. Then pick materials.

So I think a marabou tail and bunny wrapped body is what you are really looking for. Pmail me your address-betaman.

My offer still holds. I will send you the floppy tail and the bunnybody.

You have to read Dr. Doug Hannon on the attracting and triggering characteristics of lures; it applies as well to flies IMHO. Sometimes the best action is no action.

So once I made the Bunnybody, I began to think it sounded familiar. Turns out it is very similar to one of Brad Miller's top 10. It is nice to know I am tying with the stars.

Check The Fly of the Day:

Tinnman.jpg

The body is white ermine. Red and white is a true Northwoods color, and that is where the pattern comes from, MN exactly. I reinvented the wheel.

Credits:

"Tied by, Designed by Dave Kollmann St. Cloud Fly Anglers

Hook: #4 4XL streamer design – mustad #3665
Thread: light brown – 3/0
Tail. red marabou – 12 strands silver flashabou
Body tourmaline mink (cross cut) palmered to 1/8″ behind eye
Hackle: ruffed grouse shoulder feather, 2 wraps
Weight: .030 lead. 8-10 wraps on front 1/3 of shank
Note: you need a piece of cross cut mink hide 1/8″-3/lfi” x 4 3/4″ long for a 4xl hook.
Notes: coat the hook shank with cement to bond the mink hide to the hook. don’t overlap the Hide when palmering hide on the hook."

I still struggle with the red tail. So my variation will sub red bunny for the body and use white marabou for the tail.

even more material. yarn bee from hobby lobby has a new eyelash yarn called snuggle up. . just a hair over 1/2 inch and shiny makes a great leech jig . it can be cut down for a thinner profile . like most leeches in the water the tail is thicker than the narrow front end .

for the fans of ep fibers i took the advise of another tyer who said to pull apart some 4mm macrame cord. once unraveled its a dead ringer for ep fiber i agrre with him now rich mc

Rob,

How did they work?

Mike,

I finally got a chance today to spend some serious time on the water (about 8 1/2 hours) and put those flies to good use. It started slow but heated up as the water heated up. I rang up 3 x 17", 2 x 16", and a half dozen 15"ers along with numerous smaller fish. Your maribou/crosscut rabbit contributed nicely to those larger fish. White was right and the movement was ample in the clear low water. The other fly using the new material has a decent amount of movement if worked properly but it's not going to move much when the fly is not being stripped. Also the profile is smaller than I normally like to use if I think there are decent fish in the area. I think it would be an outstanding fly for white bass, rock bass, crappie or on some of the small streams that I fish where a 15" is about as large as I can hope for and often will fish with my 4 wt rod which would cast that fly with ease.

The other fly that continues to do well is that Hollow fleye. It accounted for several nice fish today along with Lefty's popper which grabbed the largest fish at 17.5 " ( I had to use white calf tail since I don't own any white squirrel tail..... I need to take a trip to Olney, IL google it : )

Rob,

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like reinventing the Fly of the Day worked out well.

I was also concerned about the size of the flies. And I have a friend new to fly fishing that has trouble casting the Ultimate Worm due to its bulk. So I went to work to lengthen the Leech. I got 3.5 and 4.5 inch versions. The longer one it two toned by furling two different colors. I have not used that one yet. The Blue has a nice undulating motion in the water. And it has a great train wreck effect. After the strip the lighter slimmer tail plies up on the bulkier head which stops first. On gear I have been getting bass on a 5" straight worm; so I hope my long worm has similar effects.

good point, rich. When the picture was taken the white fly and the grey two tone fly had not been in the water. I think they really do not look as good as the other two. These flies need to be prewashed like fashion jean.

I am calling the 4.5 the Bungee Fly after the Bungee Worm once produced by Berkley. I CAN REPORT that it really worked Thursday. Even with a maximum range of 30 ft with my Tenkara fishing from shore, I got 3 12" LMs in about 15 mins from Lake Summerset. That's not bad for mid August. The two tone tail and train wreck effect really make it look alive.

A while back rich sent me samples of Yarn Bee Snuggle Up eye lash yarn that included pink and black. From my fertile mind came the Ultimate Bungee Fly at 5.5 inches in classic two tone 50s color. If you were born in the 50s it is possible that you owe your life to this color combination. Your mom wore a a black poodle skirt with a pink sweater; your dad wore a black shirt with a pink knit tie. They were the stars of the hop; everyone said they belonged together; they got together; and then there was you.

(Now today we anglers would call this color "B and B" (Black and Bubblegum) since no self respectin' angler would buy a pink bait.)

I really like how these new materials from rich work especially the nice barred effect that I get when I furl different colors together. rich was saddened when Paton discontinued Bohemian Chenille, but this stuff might take up the slack.
